Who We Are

PECET is a multidisciplinary research group that has developed research, teaching and extension services for nearly 30 years, aimed at the poorest communities suffering tropical diseases.

This research group has carried out its work in all endemic departments of Colombia and Central America (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Venezuela), the Mediterranean (Spain, France, Morocco, Tunisia), Sub-Saharan Africa (Ethiopia) and Asia (Bhutan). This has been recognized by the World Health Organization as a reference center for the formation and training of researchers and assessment of drugs and vaccines.

PECET records include more than 250 completed projects, 340 articles in national and international journals and more than 800 presentations at worldwide events which has brought the recognition by Colciencias A1 Excellence Group.
For almost 30 years, the work at PECET has been recognized with important awards such as:
- National Research Prize in Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences, awarded by the Foundation "Alejandro Angel Escobar" twice and two Honorable Mentions in the same category.
- National Research Award of the Colombian Society of Entomology on several occasions.
- Three honorable mentions of the Medicine National Academy
- International award for best research in Social Sciences and Health issued by the International Forum for Social Sciences and Health of Scotland.
- Several awards from the Universidad de Antioquia.
- International Research Award from the University of Andalusia, Spain
- Colombia Elsevier Scopus Prize
- Colombian Exemplary Award
- Germán Saldarriaga del Valle Award
- National Award for Scientific Merit
- Greater Impact Research Award given by the Mayoralty of Medellin, among others

PECET is a constantly growing group that brings together professionals from all fields and disciplines like: biological, natural, social and health disciplines as well. Everyone brings the best of it with the sole purpose of understanding the history nature of the disease in order to determine the risk of infection and to design and recommend prevention and control programs for every researched disease.
PECET has been recognized by the World Health Organization -WHO- as a collaborating center for the teaching, training, research and evaluation of medicines and vaccines. Currently, it is enabled by the Regional Health of Antioquia to provide services specialized in tropical medicine consultation, clinical laboratory and pharmacy services and is certified by the INVIMA in GCP.
